BoxGenie: Custom Boxes in Any Size, Designed and Priced Live on Shopify

The Challenge

BoxGenie sells custom printed packaging online: mailer boxes, shipping boxes, folders and triangle mailers, printed with the customer’s own artwork, starting at 100 boxes. Every order is a different size, a different board and a different print. Off-the-shelf Shopify sells fixed products at fixed prices. BoxGenie needed a store where a customer could type in any size, see a real price, design the box in 3D, approve a proof and check out, all without talking to sales.

The Launch (2020)

We have built BoxGenie with their team since the brand began. In about 12 weeks in 2020 we created the brand identity and launched the store on Shopify:

• BoxGenie’s brand identity and guidelines
• A custom Shopify theme for configurable products
• Integration with CloudLab’s browser-based 3D box designer
• Live pricing for custom sizes, with quantity tiers

Six Years On: What We Run Today

Any size, priced live

A customer enters length, width and depth, picks a board and print option, and sees a price straight away. One pricing engine, built from BoxGenie’s material charts, prices the storefront and the staff tool the same way.

Design, proof, order

Five box styles open in a browser 3D designer. The customer uploads artwork or designs in place, gets a PDF proof back, and the approved design travels with the order.

Order Genie, for the sales team

Order Genie is BoxGenie’s internal ordering tool. Staff build a quote on the same pricing engine and it becomes a Shopify draft order, so phone and email orders follow the same rules as the website.

One app instead of two

By 2026 the custom box backend had grown into two separate systems: a legacy Laravel Shopify app and a standalone ordering tool. We rebuilt both into one app and cut it over to production in August 2026. The storefront, the designer hand-off, proofs, dielines and Order Genie now run on one codebase.

How we ship

Price changes and releases are checked before and after they go live, against the live price endpoint and real product pages. Nothing is assumed to work until it has been tested on the real store.
